The University of Michigan-Dearborn offers an exciting new opportunity for an Director of Laboratories in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, specifically the Natural Sciences Department (NSCI). The successful applicant will oversee two lab managers, two lab technicians, and part-time lab support staff. They will collaborate with NSCI faculty, lab coordinators, and Facilities Operations for laboratory maintenance, renovations, and repairs, and be responsible for supervision of the six Natural Science buildings on campus. This position oversees all research and instructional labs, including and incorporating safe practices in these spaces. - The Director of Laboratories will play a strategic and crucial role in the business of health and safety practices and policies in NSCI. In collaboration with staff and faculty, the successful applicant will provide resources and experience in chemical waste management, animal program management, bio-safety, and radioactive use protocols as dictated by their representative agencies at University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. We instruct approximately 125 separate laboratory sections per year, and the Director of Laboratories is responsible for the smooth and safe delivery of these learning opportunities.
- The successful applicant will represent NSCI in matters pertaining to its physical footprint and connection to access, shipping, and receiving, and other services pertaining to the safe and secure function of the department.
- The Director of Laboratories reports to the Department Chair and interfaces directly with the Department's academic disciplines, individual faculty teaching and research, and laboratory support staff; providing direction, assistance, and support by managing the buildings and laboratories.
- The successful applicant will supervise the NSCI technical staff, two Lab Managers, Lab Supervisor.
- The Director will be a financial reviewer, collaborating with the Department Financial Specialist, Department Administrator, and Department Chair in budgetary matters pertaining to laboratories, equipment, and buildings.
- The Director of Laboratories, together with faculty, will ensure that all labs are operating under the appropriate guidelines and requirements of EHS, EPA, DHS, MIOSH, HazMat, IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) in the partnership with Facilities and Planning.
- The successful candidate will demonstrate strong and effective communication skill and leadership in safety and in overseeing laboratory purchases, inventories, equipment maintenance, laboratory fee management, key requests, and departmental event management.
- 5-7 years working experience in facility management, space planning, and space management necessary. This includes experience in Environmental Health and Safety or related working experience in a laboratory setting (required).
- M.S. in Chemistry or a closely related field such as: Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.
- Knowledge of safe laboratory and facility operations practices in a research environment, including experience with health and safety regulations, policies, and techniques.
- Experience in hazardous waste disposal.
- Extensive knowledge of OSHA & MIOSHA, EPA, MDEQ, and DOT rules.
- Ability to work in a team environment and independently, exercise initiative, judgment, and provide effective communication and leadership in laboratory safety.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software and common internet applications such as: Google Drive, Google Docs and the ability to learn and employ routine UM web applications for work orders, hiring, and purchasing sites.
- 7-10 years working experience in Environmental Health and Safety or related working experience in laboratory setting.
- Past experience working in a higher education environment.
- Knowledge of Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations
- Experience and/or education in building systems design.
- Experience with project management of laboratory and/or facility design and construction is desired.
- Experience working with stakeholders to identify and document all functional and technical requirements.
- Experience effectively reading blueprints, schematics and working drawings.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification, or documented experience.
- Experience in overseeing/managing budgets in an academic, business, science, or engineering setting.
