The Industrial Hygiene Specialist is the territorial technical lead who uses specialized knowledge and experience consulting with internal and external customers to reduce policyholder employee illness and injury potential. As a member of Zenith's Los Angeles Region Safety & Health Dept., they also contribute to effective underwriting decisions with timely and accurate policyholder rating and risk information.
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Identify, evaluate, and report policyholder workers’ compensation claim potential, with deep expertise in occupational health and illness exposures.
Conduct industrial hygiene evaluations, surveys, and sampling at policyholder locations.
Conduct ergonomic evaluations and analysis at policyholder locations.
Develop and submit recommendations to reduce employee illness/injury potential and workers’ compensation costs.
Partner with region and corp. leaders to assist with internal staff skill assessment, coaching, and technical development.
Participate on national Industrial Hygiene Practice Group.
Conduct underwriting surveys at prospect and policyholder locations to define business operations, key employee injury/illness exposures, and controls adequacy.
Develop safety and health service plans and deliver ongoing consultation to assigned policyholders.
Use evidence-based consulting to define key claim exposures and prioritize policyholder service needs.
Influence policyholder decision-makers to implement safety and health recommendations.
Prepare effective reports for policyholders and internal partners.
Build and maintain productive work relationships with policyholders, agents/brokers, and internal staff.
Market Zenith and the Safety & Health department.
Education, Skills, and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree required and master’s degree desired with preferred field of study in industrial hygiene, occupational safety & health, science, or engineering.
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation with at least five years professional industrial hygiene experience across various industries.
Knowledge of sampling including method selection, equipment use, lab coordination, and results analysis.
Experience with ergonomic evaluation tools and controls preferred.
Knowledge of workers’ compensation insurance including familiarity with experience modification, underwriting, claims, and agents/brokers.
Effective communication and presentation skills.
Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and complete reports.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other common business software.
Ability to learn and use proprietary Zenith systems.
Driver License in good standing.
California overnight travel estimated at 15% from occasional assignments in Zenith's Fresno and San Diego Region territories.
