The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. We deliver 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water per day to 8.5 million New York City residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York, and we collect and treat an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day.
The Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) which is responsible for the operation and maintenance and protection of New York City’s drinking water distribution and wastewater collection systems, the protection of adjacent waterways and natural drainage (wetlands), and the development of the Department’s Capital Water and Sewer Infrastructure Program. The Bureau also approves and inspects water and sewer connections performed by licensed plumbers and/or authorized contractors. In addition, BWSO has overall responsibility for the approval and inspection of all public and private construction projects as they relate to the City’s water or sewer systems.
DEP/WSO is seeking a motivated high level Engineer to oversee a group of Engineers and Technical staff engaged in the detailed review and progress of complex major projects within the five boroughs of New York City including the design and reconstruction of the City Sewer and Water infrastructures. Candidate under the direction of Section Chief, will provide technical advice, manage initiatives and re-structure review processes and policies while ensuring reviews are conducted in timely manner and keeping with technical requirements.
The selected candidate will be responsible for activities in several main areas, which includes: Assisting in reviewing or possibly spearheading any modifications to the standards, specification and guidelines and therefore should have an in depth knowledge of all regulatory and relevant standards; having in-depth knowledge and experience in hydraulic calculations used in the assessment of sewer performance and capacity; coordinate with the Office of Green Infrastructures to review and implement the installation of proposed bio-swales and tree pits in the City streets; assisting the Section Chief to prepare progress reports and metrics of the Plan Review Section; represent the agency in meetings with other city and state agencies, consulting engineers and architect.

Qualifications: A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer is required. In addition, candidates must have six (6) years of full-time paid experience in civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical or air pollution control engineering work, at least two (2) years of which shall have been as an administrative engineer.
Preferred Skills: Experience and in-depth knowledge of water and sewer design standards, specifications and design and construction procedures; familiar with GIS and AutoCAD; ability to handle multiple priorities and projects simultaneously; self-driven, hands on, problem solver with the ability to work independently with little or no supervision; familiar with Environmental Health and Safety policies.
