BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree in industrial hygiene or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science from an accredited college or university that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
OR Combination of education and experience--at least 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours as specified above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements, applicants must have one or more years of progressively responsible related experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position.
To qualify for the GS-11, SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Creditable specialized experience includes: industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices to conduct surveys to identify and evaluate health hazards and potential health hazards; evaluate physical and chemical hazards such as noise, explosives, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation, ventilation, pesticides within a workplace environment; utilize and calibrate industrial hygiene measurement equipment such as indoor air quality meters, infrared analyzers, and moisture meters to evaluate environment stresses; provide recommendations to eliminate or reduce stresses for chemical and physical agents within work environments. OR Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D degree or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
To qualify for the GS-12, SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Creditable specialized experience includes: industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices to perform, organize and/or direct on-site surveys and investigations in offices, shops, aboard ships and aircraft, and conducts literature search to determine nature and severity of hazards present; evaluate physical and chemical hazards such as noise, explosives, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation , ventilation, pesticides within a workplace environment; utilize and calibrate industrial hygiene measurement equipment such as indoor air quality meters, infrared analyzers, and moisture meters to evaluate environment stresses; develop training programs on industrial hygiene and occupational health issues; serve as an panelist regarding industrial hygiene matters and federal regulations on physical and chemical hazards in the workplace; interpret legal requirements for hazardous material controls and disposal methods for environmental emergency contingency plans.
Certification: AIHA Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)" is desired, but not required.
