San Diego State University is seeking an experienced and hands-on leader to serve as the Senior Director of Environmental Health & Safety. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Administration, the Senior Director of Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for the operational management of the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) department, consisting of the following functional units: Laboratory/Research Safety and Industrial Safety/Hygiene and Environmental Programs. This position will establish a strategic departmental operational plan with specific and measurable goals and monitor progress against this plan. The Senior Director of Environmental Health & Safety will also serve as the point of contact with governmental safety and regulatory agencies on environmental, safety, and emergency management issues that affect the University. This position will provide professional advice to campus leadership, faculty, and staff on safety and regulatory issues affecting the University’s instructional and research functions. Graduate degree in a relevant field from an accredited college or university; Ph.D degree preferred
Seven years of experience managing professional/technical and administrative staff
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team
Familiarity with laboratory safety with an emphasis on biosafety safety and risk assessment and other regulatory requirements in a research laboratory
Skills in administration, the application of management principles and practices, the application of environmental laws and regulations and research administration
An understanding of the research culture in a university setting
Experience with the development and implementation of department-level strategic planning and process improvement mapping/modeling
