This senior systems engineer position will provide RedHat/Centos Linux support to a number of the critical Linux projects throughout the Johns Hopkins enterprise. This position will also provide secondary support for our Precision Medicine / HortonWorks Hadoop project.
Requires detailed installation, configuration, troubleshooting of the internals of UNIX operating environment (RedHat or Centos Linux). Knowledge of and practical experience performing capacity planning and performance tuning across the UNIX environments. Ability to quickly assess systems related problems and provide resolutions with minimal impacts to user community. Experience in configuring the UNIX operating environment for a 24x7 environment utilizing clustering technology. Ability to develop midrange strategic planning documents, present to audiences at all levels, and obtain justification for initiatives to move towards an integrated health care delivery information systems environment.
Ability to provide operating system based insights to other Midrange Technical Services staff to support their efforts, help them trouble-shoot their problems, and assist in tuning non-operating system components. Familiarity with VMWare is helpful.
Bachelor’s degree. Additional experience can be substituted for education.
Six years related experience. Additional education can be substituted for experience.
Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
RedHat or Centos Linux. Experience with VMWare running Linux VMs. Experience with automated builds, automated updates, job scheduling, disaster recovery, user security, file system security, encryption, and monitoring.
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
The senior systems engineer should have significant experience with RedHat or Centos Linux (preferred) running in a stand-alone (server) or VMWare (virtual) environment. Experience with technologies in used in our Hadoop environment including Cloudbreak, HortonWorks Hadoop, HortonWorks Data Flow, Nifi, Ansible, Docker, MySQL, Kerberos, LDAP, NGINX, TomCat.
Technical qualifications or specialized certifications: RedHat Systems Administrator certified (preferred)
