This position will work in the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH and S) with duties that encompass all missions of OHSU, but will have a strong focus on environmental protection. EH and S oversees/manages programs and policies aimed at minimizing safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks to the OHSU community. The EH and S program encompasses chemical, biosafety, fire/life safety, radiation safety, environmental protection as well as general safety oversight across the university. Projects and/or responsibilities in other areas may also be assigned.
The EH&S Environmental Protection Manager will lead the Environmental Protection Team, under the overall direction of the EH&S Director. Responsibilities include:
Monitors work processes, procedures and establishes programs which drive team performance toward departmental and organizational goals;
Ensures OHSU compliance with Local, State, and Federal environmental regulations and permitting requirements as well as OHSU policies. Monitor for changes in local, state and federal environmental regulatory requirements. Initiate and participate in developing OHSU\u2019s response to new or changing regulations. Develops technical guidance on new regulatory requirements to ensure consistent interpretation and action;
Manages and oversees environmental permitting, hazardous waste, lead and asbestos, UST/AST program programs and associated agency interactions including regulatory affairs support;
Partners with and provides technical expertise and guidance to OHSU stakeholders;
Develops comprehensive long and short range plans and strategies which support OHSU\u2019s mission and goals; assists, participates and makes recommendations in review and formation of OHSU policies;
Organizes and schedules all necessary resources required to accomplish activities;
Reviews and evaluates work to ensure quality, timeliness and adherence to policies and procedures;
Oversees personnel needs of the department including selecting, coaching, and training employees and evaluating employee performance. Provides input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions;
Maintains technical knowledge and a current awareness of new developments and techniques;
Build, strengthen and maintain positive working relationships with regulatory agencies, partners, contractors, consultants and other stake holders.
This position will provide consultative services to program stakeholders; collaborate with internal groups and outside agencies to ensure compliance with related standards; coordinate activities of EH&S team; manage performance improvement activities; provide guidance, direction, and review of training and communication materials and initiatives; and represent EH&S on a variety of OHSU-wide committees and initiatives. This position has a strong customer-service and project management orientation. This position is accountable for the leadership, coordination, and supervision of a team within EH&S, with the goal of providing expert guidance on compliance, safety excellence, and customer service.
