This position will provide support for a laboratory in the Neuroimmunology and Neurological Infections Division of Department of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine East Baltimore Campus.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
The position is in a disease-oriented research group that addresses questions in basic neurobiology, and in clinical neurology. The primary interests of the group are: 1) To identify biomarkers markers for neurodegenerative diseases including HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder, Alzheimer's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury. 2) To better understand the lipid components of cellular membranes, and how these components interact with proteins to regulate signaling associated with cellular functions such as differentiation, motility, inflammatory signaling and survival. 3) To develop small molecule therapeutics that regulate lipid metabolism as a neuroprotective strategy. The person will be responsible for laboratory management, and for analysis of lipids and metabolites in human and non-human samples obtained from multiple ongoing studies.
Essential Functions of the Job:
This is primarily a research position. Expertise in multiple laboratory skills is a requirement. Laboratory skills should include RTPCR, viral-vector design (and more importantly utilization of viral-vectors to knock-down selected targets in vivo & tissue culture), fluorescent imaging of cells & tissues, Western blotting, and primary cell culture are required. Knowledge of analysis methods for handling RNAseq, and proteomic data would be an asset.
Exercises managerial or professional judgment and assumes complete responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results. Engages in regular and continuous decision making having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
BS/BA chemistry, biochemistry or neuroscience. A minimum of two years of related laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Previous laboratory experience is required. RTPCR, viral-vector design and utilization, fluorescent imaging of cells & tissues, Western blotting, and primary cell culture. Strong computing skills for various software applications, such as spreadsheets, databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, analyze and/or format data and/or test reports.
