The Baltimore City Health Department is seeking a Laboratory Assistant for its Bureau of Disease Control Laboratory for a period of 6 months upon hire. Under the direct supervision of the Director and/or Supervisor, this position requires routine specimen handling, accessioning and laboratory preparation following established procedures.
The successful candidate will perform routine lab processes, such as enter patient specimens received in the laboratory using the lab's LIS system.
Samples will be prepared for further laboratory analysis using centrifugation and/or refrigeration. Work requires precision and attention to detail.
Evaluate patient samples for adequacy prior to testing and document unsatisfactory or unacceptable specimens.
Notify client if there is missing information or if specimen integrity has been compromised.
Assist with data entry of patient demographics as needed.
Identify and report problems in completion of routine lab processes.
Place orders for lab equipment as needed.
High School Diploma/GED with some science coursework.
Prior experience working in a laboratory experience preferred. Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Basic data entry skills.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
