The Respirator/Specialty Applications Engineer is responsible for development of new products, improvements to existing products and support of scale-up of said products, with particular focus on specialty impregnated carbons for respirator applications. This position will also provide technical support to Sales and customers within the respirator market segment (both industrial and military respirators). This position reports to the Technical Services Director.
Research & Development Project Responsibilities
Support JCI product development projects on new respirator carbon products developed in conjunction with the Senior Application Development Manager, including supervision or execution of performance and validation testing of existing products and prototype carbons.
Conduct development of test methods when standard methods do not exist to test these products. Work with the Laboratory Manager to specify and procure laboratory equipment and supplies when needed to develop in-house test methods for respirator gas testing.
Understand various government standards impacting JCI products including (but not limited to) USA (42 CFR Part 84, MIL-DTL-32101, AWWA, NSF), EU (EN 14387) and Australia/New Zealand (AS/NZS 1716). Design and supervise or perform testing on existing and new products to determine compliance with these standards.
Utilize statistical tools to prepare run charts, design of experiments, gage R&R studies, and other analysis to determine product quality, process control, and set specification limits.
Provide for ongoing maintenance and calibration of instrumentation and equipment in gas testing lab. Keep abreast of new technologies to incorporate into laboratory to reduce testing time and/or increase reliability. Prepare CAPEX requests justifying cost, time, and ROI as required for purchases of updated equipment and/or supplies.
Follow good laboratory practices, safety precautions, and PPE requirements as specified per MSDS or company policy with respect to operation of the gas testing lab.
Prepare written reports on results of studies or other projects for internal distribution within JCI or for distribution to customers.
Sales / Technical Support
Advise sales team on respiratory health standards
Attend conferences and meetings related to industrial hygiene and respiratory health
Participate in boards and committees related to respiratory health
Support sales personnel with customer issues related to respiratory health products through direct customer interactions, including customer visits.
Previous Work & Educational Requirements:
Master’s Degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, coupled with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience, is required. Experience and understanding of the respirator market is strongly desired in this position.
ALTERNATIVELY, Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, coupled with a minimum of 10-15 years of experience.
Proficiency with MS Office products and statistical analysis software required.
