THE MATTABASSETT DISTRICT JOB SPECIFICATION Title: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN – Assistant – Part-Time Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Laboratory Technician and/or Laboratory Manager of the Mattabassett District. Description of Duties: Assist and perform in the absence of Laboratory Technician routine analyses (BOD, COD, solids, coliform, metals, and other analyses as required). Assist and perform instrument maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting. Assist and perform sample and reagent preparation. Involved with quality control testing and routine analytical testing associated with wastewater, sludge, leachate, industrial wastes, and groundwater. Performs field sampling, other related duties as instructed, and weekend work. Responsible for keeping accurate daily records. Performs routine laboratory maintenance, glassware cleaning, acid washing, etc., and other related work as required. Minimum Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of basic mathematics (decimals, fractions, percentages, metric system), general chemistry (solutions, pH, chemical formulas), and basic laboratory procedures & safety precautions. Must have the ability to perform basic sewage and industrial waste tests and to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and subordinates. Must maintain a valid Connecticut driver's license. Will be required to pass a laboratory certification exam. Ability to understand and express complex written and verbal instructions clearly and concisely. Must be in good physical condition. Experience and Training: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Engineering or related field with two years lab experience. Computer Software expertise in Microsoft®, Excel®, Access®, Outlook® strongly desired.
