The Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Environment, http://sustainability.illinois.edu, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking a Research Specialist who can conduct basic and applied research on plant breeding and genetics of perennial grasses for the Center for Advanced Bioenergy and Bioproducts Innovation (CABBI), a multi-million dollar Bioenergy Research Center funded by DOE. Major Duties and Responsibilities: •Prepare and execute experiments on plant breeding and genetics of perennial grasses, especially Miscanthus and sugarcane. Work will be conducted in the field, greenhouse, growth chamber and office. •Oversee the cultivation of plants in the field and greenhouse, and propagation of plants in preparation of field trials. •Collect data from research experiments; implement high-throughput systems that include designing barcodes, setting up and using Bluetooth enabled measuring devices, and linking the collection devices to tablet computers for in-field data collection. •Recruit and supervise hourly research assistants. Responsibilities includes task assignment, scheduling, performance monitoring and evaluation, position mentoring, and leave/travel approval. •Manage data files and organize completed files on the local area network. •Supervise the collection and processing of seed and biomass samples. •Coordinate and participate in off-campus field experiments with collaborators. •Conduct routine maintenance on field plot research equipment. •Maintain inventories of supplies, equipment, seed, and plants in the greenhouses. •Order supplies and lab stock as needed. •Other related duties as assigned to further the mission of the CABBI Project.
Required: B.S. in Plant Biology or related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered/ accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience, depending upon the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. At least 3 years of experience conducting plant breeding and genetics research. Knowledge of plant breeding and genetics research techniques. Effective communication, personal relations, organizational, and team leader skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively with a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment, consisting of multiple and changing priorities, under minimal supervision. Sound judgment and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in commonly-employed software and databases.
Preferred: M.S. in Plant Biology or related field. 5+ years of experience conducting grass and/or forage breeding and genetic research. Experience leading a field crew. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of greenhouses, tractors, threshers, and small farm equipment. Training, Licenses or Certifications: Already has or has the ability to obtain an IL Pesticide Applicator's License.
