The City of Virginia Beach Public Utilities Department is currently seeking an Engineer I/II to join their team.
Job duties include:
Prepare and review plans, specifications, estimates, and reports involving the construction, maintenance and operation of a variety of water and sanitary sewer projects to ensure compliance with Public Utilities standards and city, state, and federal requirements
Serve as project manager for water and sanitary sewer projects and will ensure timely and on budget design and construction
Conduct field investigations
Prepare reports and maintain project documentation and records
Perform contract administration for design and construction projects
Coordinate the work of engineering technicians and/or construction inspectors to ensure quality of the project effort
Perform engineering or hydraulic studies
Perform limited engineering design work and administer contracts to ensure plans meet standards
Review construction plans prepared by engineering consultants for conformity with department and city specifications and policies and coordinate with adjacent developments, roads, and utilities
Conduct public meetings for their projects; prepare written comments and recommend approval of plans for documentation of files
Prepare written comments for VDOT, City boards and commissions to ensure compliance with special needs of the City
Meet with VDOT, VDH, DCR, and DEQ representatives, developers, consultants, contractors, and the public to resolve problems or to explain City and departmental policies and procedures.

Engineer I: Requires a Bachelor’s degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) approved engineering or engineering technology program, or an Associate’s Degree with six (6) years of progressive experience of engineering level work, or any combination of education and experience acceptable to and approved by, the Virginia Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA) to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. SPECIAL: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Engineer II: Requires a Bachelor's Degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) approved engineering or engineering technology program with possession of an E.I.T. (Engineer In Training) Certificate and two (2) years of progressive professional experience; OR a Bachelor’s Degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) approved engineering technology program with possession of a Land Surveyor’s license and two (2) years of progressive professional experience; OR an Associate’s Degree in Engineering with six (6) years’ progressive professional experience plus possession of an E.I.T. Certification, OR a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license from the Virginia Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA). SPECIAL: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Additional Salary Information: Will be hired at the I or II level depending on qualifications.
