Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide technical consultation to BNSF personnel regarding industrial hygiene concerns relative to regulations, training, risk identification, hazard evaluation and control.
Identify and evaluate employee exposures to environmental health stressors, such as asbestos, lead, diesel exhaust, silica, welding fume, noise and varying forms of radiation. Prepare short and long-term exposure monitoring schemes, establish and coordinate quality assurance/control measures for laboratories and industrial hygiene database.
Determine risk management plans based upon field exposure assessment, FELA/Claims experience, regulatory standards, and industry standards of care and injury/illness experiences. These efforts principally include designing and developing exposure controls such as work practice changes, training and skill enhancement programs, equipment and work environment modifications, and are managed using interdisciplinary groups and other resources that provide the required support.
Design, develop and maintain a performance measuring process on complex and comprehensive programs such as the respiratory protection program and industrial hygiene database system that will enable management to determine their progress and proficiency relative to the prevention of injuries and illnesses due to chemical, biological, and physical risk factors.
Conduct employee training and provide technical presentations to field management and industries that may impact rail operations or vice versa. Prepare technical writing for training, presentations, company performance standards as well as findings and recommendation of field studies. Provide recommendation and expertise to support BNSF Law and General Claims Departments and contracted law firms on environmental health issues.
Maintain active relationships with engineering, mechanical, field safety, division operations, strategic sourcing and supply and legal department. Support and participate in division/departmental safety and staff meetings.
Evaluate Federal and State OSHA, DOT and FRA health regulated current and proposed programs and practices relative to conducting BNSF business.

Bachelor of Science degree in industrial hygiene, core sciences or related engineering field.
Must be a Certified Industrial Hygienist in good standing with the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
Minimum of 5 years of experience in comprehensive industrial hygiene practice corporate environment.
Ability to travel 40-50%.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must have the ability to work under minimal supervision and direction and to exercise sound judgment. Must possess excellent group dynamic interpersonal and negotiating skills and have the ability to manage large networks of people.
Solid understanding and experience in state and federal OSHA programs and regulations.
Ability to understand and apply solutions involving engineering controls, personal protective equipment, industrial hygiene field sampling techniques and railroad technologies.
